Taiwan Hakka Cultural Center International Competition

The "transformation" of Hakka culture will be interpreted with transition process from "subdue" to "prominence." The circulation is organized under the principle of "Pan and Chang": parking circulation / gallery circulation / administrative circulation / ecological circulation. The landscape depicts four site development strategies: humble and self-refrain, downward excavation, emerging, and co-existence.

The character "Pan" means circle in Chinese. with circled-around ribbon form, it symbolizes the space of natural cycle. The character "Chang" means loneness in Chinese. With the form of extended band, it symbolizes the eternity. The joining of "Pan" and "Chang" reiterate the in-exhaustion of Hakka civilization. Functional plan is organized under the order of "Pan" to form a sequence. The culture facility will feature "Chang" as the core concept of circulation planning. In landscape, park and ecology system, the design addressed issues: The men-made objects mingle with ecology system harmoniously, indigenous creatures and wetland rehab, local hakka plants and agriculture landscape rehab and so on.

Taiwan Hakka Culture Center needs a clear attitude to proceed as the permanent home towards all of Hakka people around the globe. As the permanent home for Hakka, with interpretation of the duality of prominence and inwardness in Hakka culture, it might not be as noticeable, but complimentary with the landform. Earth emerged and excavated transforming into covering and opening, the extension of landform translate into the uniqueness of this architecture.
