Jiaxing Complex with Shopping Mall, Office and Residential
Over the past one thousand years, no other means of transportation as the Grand Canal has been so profoundly influenced the trade between north and south china. More than any other Chinese city, Jiaxing has cultivated a trading and retailing characteristics with its superior location on the south end of the Grand Canal.
The site, located between the main commercial district and historical canal onshore spot of the Qing Emperor Qianlong, with his famous inspection tours to south china. In thinking about the relation between architecture and commercial, and also in terms of historical past, an interpretation with “the window to the Grand Canal” turns the complex to a theme mall of canal transportation. The mixed-use development of shopping, retail, restaurant, hotel, conference center, offices and residential are separated into two land planning block and dramatically linked by a linear glass roof atrium with shopping space alone. The atrium, which is exhibited of canal transportation, takes visitors in and enables them to experience shopping process like a voyage of understanding of historical past. To the end a terrace looking down to the canal and a pedestrian overpass guides visitors to a public walk along the Grand Canal edge.
Environmental effects have been the major considerations in the layout. The will be the noise from north commercial zone, so the residential buildings located to the south to perceive view of canal；mall and hotel entrance oriented to north and north-east to welcome the main streams of visitors；office building are oriented to north-west to close to government and financial facilities nearby.
